Current Events 


The term "current events" refers to the events that are occurring at this particular time in our lives: the news we watch on television, listen to on the radio, or read in our daily newspaper, online news services, or weekly news magazine. This guide focuses on resources for "current events information." These resources can be used:

  • to learn the facts about a recent event, such as elections
  • to study trends such a problems in the Middle East
  • to discover contemporary opinions or reactions to an historic topic or one that just occurred

To search the current week's articles in Fort Wayne newspapers, select the link to "Journal Gazette" (the morning paper) or "News-Sentinel" (the evening paper) for a selection of feature articles, editorials, obituaries, and other news. To search older articles, choose the "Archives" link from the navigation bar to access the free newspaper archive service. The Journal Gazette is indexed from 1992 to present, and the News-Sentinel is indexed from 1990 to present; current coverage is delayed. Search for keywords in the lead, headline, byline, or text of articles. Searching is free, but a personal account is required to view full-text articles through this service. Prices vary by source newspaper and are posted. In the free format, results display only the first few lines of text and the date and page number of the paper. LexisNexis Academic provides full-text access or indexing and abstracting of nearly 6,000 information resources, covering a wide range of subjects including general and political news from U.S. and international sources, corporate news and financial information, industry and market news, federal and state law, law reviews, transcripts of Congressional hearings, medicine and health, state and country profiles, and biographical information. Provides access to major papers in the Guided News Search under General News > Major Papers, including the Christian Science Monitor (1980 to present), Los Angeles Times (current six months), New York Times (Final New York City ed.), including the New York Times Book Review and New York Times Magazine (1980 to present), and Washington Post (1977 to present). Newspaper Source (EBSCOhost)

Content:

Provides abstracts and indexing of national newspapers, update daily, including the New York Times (Late and National editions), Wall Street Journal (Eastern edition), Washington Post, and USA Today. Provides full-text access to nearly 250 U.S., regional, and international newspapers and newswire services, including the Christian Science Monitor. Also provides radio and TV transcripts, including 60 Minutes, National Public Radio, and others. Also provides the full text of business news in local papers published by McClatchy-Tribune, including the News-Sentinel. Coverage is from the mid-1990s to present, and includes everything except obituaries (exclusive of famous people), sports tables, ads/classifieds, stock prices, and weather. The IPFW library receives the New York Times National edition in paper and Late edition in microfilm, and the Wall Street Journal Midwest edition in paper and Eastern edition in microfilm. A complete list of titles covered is available.

Historical New York Times (ProQuest)

Content:

Provides full-text PDF page images of the New York Daily Times from 1851-1857 and New York Times from 1857 to two years ago. Cover-to-cover content includes news stories, editorials, photos, graphics, supplements, and advertisements, as well as the content of the New York Times Magazine and New York Times Book Review. Some images contributed by independent journalists and writers may not be available via ProQuest Historical Newspapers due to the Supreme Court's Tasini copyright ruling; in these cases, the microfilm edition is the authoritative source for archival access.

Wall Street Journal Index

Content:

In separate volumes, indexes articles in the Wall Street Journal by general subject and corporate name. Separate sections provide closing Dow-Jones averages and indexing for the weekly Barron's publication (Periodicals HG1 .B6, current year only in Serials). Indexing is based on the Eastern edition, matching the library's microfilm edition, with library holdings 1955 to present (MIC HF1 .C5, in microfilm cabinets). The Wall Street Journal is also indexed online in Business Source Premier and Lexis Nexis Academic Universe.

Other Current Events Research Resources

CQ Researcher (CQ Press)

Content:

CQ Researcher investigates one of the "hot" topics in the news every week and presents concise and well-balanced information from all sides of the issue. Topics range from social and teen issues to environment, health, education and technology. Each report is written by an experienced journalist and includes a "Pro/Con" segment, a chronology, and a bibliography. Full-text reports are available dating back to October 1991. Reports produced since January 1996 are available in PDF format as well.
