IUCAT Request Delivery Fact Sheet

What is Request Delivery?

Request Delivery is a service of Indiana University libraries that allows faculty, students, and staff to request the delivery of an item found in the IUCAT catalog to any participating IU library.

Who may use Request Delivery?

Request Delivery is available to any Indiana University (IU) or IPFW faculty, student, or staff member with a valid university network ID and password.

What kind of material can I request?

Most items that can normally be checked out of a participating IU library can be obtained through Request Delivery. Items that cannot be supplied through this service include:

  • Non-circulating materials, such as reference books or periodicals
  • Materials that are currently checked out
  • Materials marked as On Order or In Process
  • Materials on reserve
  • Items with loan periods of 14 days or less

In addition, Request Delivery cannot be used to obtain items from IU libraries that are not participating in the service, including:

  • Bloomington Archives of Traditional Music (B-ATM)
  • Bloomington Indiana Institute on Disability (B-CEDIR)
  • Bloomington Cyclotron Library (B-CYCLOTRN)
  • Bloomington Kinsey Institute Library (B-KINSEY)
  • Bloomington Law Library (B-LAW)
  • Bloomington Lilly Library (B-LILLY)
  • Bloomington Residential Programs and Services (library locations beginning BH)
  • ONLINE library (These materials are available electronically)

How do I place a request?

In order to use Request Delivery faculty, students, and staff must log in using the login button at the top of the IUCAT search screen. It is best to log in to Request Delivery before beginning a search in IUCAT, because the authentication process will start a new IUCAT session forcing you to redo your search.

What should I do if I cannot log in?

IPFW faculty, students, and staff who have problems logging in should contact the Helmke Library Service Desk at 260-481-6505.

How do I obtain materials not available through IUCAT's Request Delivery?

If an item is not available through Request Delivery service, an error screen provides a link to MORE OPTIONS. Select the campus or library with which you are affiliated for additional information and assistance. IPFW's referral page, IUCAT Request Delivery Error suggests that you try Document Delivery Services to obtain material not available through IUCAT's Request Delivery.

How do I check the status of my requests?

IUCAT's My Account allows you to review requests that you have placed and materials that you have checked out, and to cancel requests no longer needed. It also allows you to renew materials received through Request Delivery. The My Account login appears at the top of the IUCAT search screen.

Will I be notified when my materials arrive?

You will be notified by campus e-mail when your items are available for pickup. Remember you can forward your campus e-mail to another account if you do not regularly check your IPFW account.

How long can I keep these items?

IU libraries have agreed to uniform loan periods and renewal policies for circulating items in the Stacks location. Faculty, graduate students, and staff checkouts are 120 days. The circulation period for undergraduates is 45 days. Items shelved in other locations will circulate according to the lending library's policy. For example, IPFW videos can be checked out for 42 days.

Can I renew these items?

Renewal policies still vary among IU libraries, but many items can be renewed. Use IUCAT's My Account to request renewals online. Items that cannot be renewed will be indicated during the renewal request process. Items that cannot be renewed should be returned to the IU library closest to you before or on the due date.

What happens if my items are recalled, overdue, damaged, or lost?

Items obtained through Request Delivery are direct checkouts between the user and the lending library. Users will be billed and fined according to the policies of the lending library. IU libraries that charge a daily fine have agreed to a uniform fee of $0.25/day. Items that have been recalled must be returned immediately.  Recall fines of $25.00 are non-refundable, if material is not returned within 10 days of the date of recall.  The lending library will determine the bill for lost or damaged materials.  Bills and fines must be paid to the lending library.
