Publishing Guides 


This pathfinder is designed to provide information about how and where to begin the publishing process. Items in the General / Multidisciplinary category cover a variety of subject areas, while the remainder of the list provides guidelines for publishing in different disciplines, organized under five broad subject areas. Many of the style guides referred to in the following publications are available on the Web or in the library. See also Style Guides, a Helmke Library Subject Pathfinder.

General / Multidisciplinary

Ulrich's Web

Listed first in this Publishing Guide because of its vast amount of information, Ulrich's Web is also accessible from the library's homepage > Find Resources By... page. Containing bibliographic and ordering information for more than 250,000 worldwide serials (periodicals, annuals, irregulars, and newspapers), Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory database is searchable by author, title, publisher, ISSN or other characteristic. Included within Ulrich's Web is Katz' Magazines for Libraries which provides more than 6,850 full-text reviews from 200 subject specialists.

Association of American University Presses. Association of American University Presses, 2003. (Ready Reference Z475 .A88, [shelf 18])

"This directory serves as a guide to the publishing programs and personnel of 124 scholarly presses." It includes complete staff listings, Web site and e-mail addresses, and subject guides for specific disciplines.

Directory of Publishing Opportunities in Journals and Periodicals, 5th ed. Marquis Academic Media, 1981. (Ready Reference Z479 .R67, [shelf 18])

This directory includes a listing of 3,900 journals, in alphabetical order, covering 73 different areas of interest. Each entry includes editorial description, subject fields, manuscript requirements, and publisher contact with address and phone numbers.

Editor & Publisher International Yearbook, The Encyclopedia of the Newspaper Industry. Editor & Publisher Company, 2007. (Service Desk PN 4700 .E42, [shelf 2c])

Lists newspapers by country and by state and provides circulation, advertising, and management information as well as special editions and other information. Also included are directories of syndicates, news services, and news personnel.

Literary Market Place with Names and Numbers: The Directory of American Book Publishing. Bowker, 2004. (Service Desk PN161 .L57, [shelf 10c])

Known as the LMP, this annual lists publishers with their specialties, agents, literary awards, photo and picture sources, translators, and other book-trade information.

Magazines for Libraries, 10th ed. Bowker, 2005. (Service Desk Z6941 .M23, [shelf 4a])

Regularly updated by Bill and Linda Katz, this is an annotated guide to periodicals for school and college libraries. The annotations indicate contents and intended audience as well as special features. There is no manuscript information provided.  The reviews are also available via Ulrich's Web for individual periodicals (accessible from the library's homepage > Find Resources By...).

Publishers and Booksellers (Helmke Library Subject Pathfinder)

Many publishers provide online access to bibliographic references, abstracts, and other information about their publications. This list is compiled by IPFW librarians and updated frequently.

Writers Market: Where to Sell What You Write. Writers Digest, 2008. (Service Desk PN161 .W83, [shelf 10c])

This is a freelance writer's guide to marketing his or her manuscripts. It covers hints on preparing manuscripts, proper cover letters, and copyright. A directory of magazines that pay for articles covers consumer publications, trade, technical, and professional journals, subsidy book publishers, and miscellaneous freelance markets and services.

Business

Cabell's Directory of Publishing Opportunities in Accounting, 8th ed.   Cabell Publishing Co., 2005. (Ready Reference HF5635 .C33, [shelf 18])

Covers manuscript requirements and review procedures of more than 130 journals and includes names of editors along with e-mail addresses and URLs. An alphabetical index includes type of review, number of external reviewers, and acceptance rates for each journal listed.

Cabell's Directory of Publishing Opportunities in Economics and Finance, 8th ed., 2 vols.  Cabell Publishing Company, 2005.  (Ready Reference HB63 .C33, [shelf 18])

Another two-volume set in the Cabell Directory series, these volumes review publishing information for more than 350 journals.  Again, complete editor information, e-mail addresses and URLs are provided along with specific periodical requirements for publication.

Cabell's Directory of Publishing Opportunities in Management, 8th ed., 4 vols.  Cabell Publishing Co., 2005. (Ready Reference HD28 .C23, [shelf 18])

The largest of all the Cabell directories, this four-volume edition encompasses information about 540 journals in the management area.  All pertinent information for publication in each periodical is provided in detail, often including guidelines for electronic journals and article formatting design and procedures, along with information regarding charts/tables and notes/references.

Cabell's Directory of Publishing Opportunities in Marketing, 8th ed.  Cabell Publishing Company, 2005. (Ready Reference HF5410 .C23, [shelf 18])

More than 160 journals are listed in this edition and provide manuscript information, which includes "the type of review process used by the editor(s), acceptance rates, fees charged, copies required," and topics that will be considered.

International Guide to Accounting Journals, 2nd ed. Markus Wiener, 1993. (Ready Reference Z7164.C81 S772, [shelf 18])

Arranged alphabetically, this guide gives "information about leading academic and professional journals that publish unsolicited articles on accounting topics." Editor and publisher information is included along with primary readership, circulation, and general manuscript requirements.

Refereed and Nonrefereed Economics Journals: A Guide to Publishing Opportunities. Greenwood, 1988. (Ready Reference HB63 .M54, [shelf 18])

Presents publication, review, and manuscript information for more than 200 U.S. and international titles. Includes a bibliography of articles about economics journals.

Education

Cabell's Directory of Publishing Opportunities in Educational Curriculum and Methods, 6th ed., 2 vols. Cabell, 2006. (Ready Reference L11 .C252, [shelf 18])

Discussing more than 350 journals, this directory includes all manuscript submission requirements, circulation data, manuscript topics, etc. As found in other Cabell directories, complete addresses, notes on style, and format are also included.

Education Journals and Serials: An Analytical Guide. Greenwood, 1988. (Ready Reference Z5813 .C64, [shelf 18])

English language publications in the field of education are listed by broad topic. Each title is annotated with contents, the format of a "typical" issue and manuscript information.

Health Sciences

Dentistry Journals and Serials: An Analytical Guide. Greenwood, 1985. (Ready Reference Z6668 .K68, [shelf 18])

Lists and describes more than 600 dentistry journals published worldwide. Includes a geographical index, an index of publishers, and a classified title index.

How to Write and Publish Articles in Nursing. Springer Publishing Company, 1997. (Ready Reference RT24 .S54, [shelf 18])

Designed for nurses who are interested in publishing, this edition "includes techniques, exercises, practical checklists, and forms for every stage of the writing and marketing process." Extensive references are given at the end of each chapter along with appendices of publications, writing and literary associations, and healthcare publication information.

Writer's Guide to Nursing and Allied Health Journals. American Nurses Association, 1998. (Ready Reference RT24 .B69, [shelf 18])

Covers "more than 500 volumes, including address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail and Web site addresses, audience, publication frequency, and manuscript acceptance rate." Also lists manuscript submission requirements.

Humanities

Guide to Publishing Opportunities for Librarians. Haworth, 1995. (Ready Reference Z665.2 .U6 S37, [shelf 18])

"This book provides a comprehensive listing of library-related serial publications. Arranged alphabetically, each entry describes the purpose and scope of the publication and gives the name of the editor, the business, the editorial policy, the acceptance rate, manuscript requirements, and telecommunications."

Historical Journals: A Handbook for Writers and Reviewers. McFarland, 1993. (Ready Reference Z6205 .S73, [shelf 18])

This handbook lists and describes "nearly 700 journals published in the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain, and provides specific information on editorial standards and publishing policies of each."

Historical Periodicals Directory, 2 vols. ABC-Clio, 1981. (Ready Reference Z6205 .H654, [shelf 18])

Presents a summary of publishing information and contents focus for U.S., Canadian, and international journals in history. History is defined broadly to include archaeology, genealogy, historic preservation, and history education.

International Directory of Little Magazines and Small Presses, 35th ed. Dustbooks, 2007/2008. (Service Desk [10c], Reference Z6944.L5 D5)

Primarily for creative writers, this directory gives addresses and contents notes, but no manuscript requirements. There is a subject index.

The Iowa Guide: Scholarly Journals in Mass Communication and Related Fields, 6th ed. The University of Iowa, 1995. (Ready Reference Z6944.S3 G371, [shelf 18])

"Offers the latest available information on the publication requirements and procedures for submitting manuscripts to more than 150 scholarly journals in communication, mass communication and other fields."

MLA International Bibliography: A Guide to Journals and Serials in Languages and Literature. Language Association of America, 1999. (Ready Reference Z7006 .M632, [shelf 18])

This last printed edition provides subscription information, editorial descriptions and manuscript submission requirements for the more than 3,000 journals indexed in the MLA International Bibliography.

MLA Directory of Scholarly Presses in Language and Literature, 2nd ed. Modern Language Association, 1996. (Ready Reference Z286.S57 M563, [shelf 18])

"Describes the fields of interest, submission requirements, contract provisions, and editorial procedures of scholarly publishers of book-length literary and linguistic studies."

Poet's Market: Where & How to Publish Your Poetry. Writer's Digest Books, 2005. (Ready Reference PN1059.M3 P63, [shelf 18])

Hundreds of publishers of poetry are listed and described along with tips for submitting poetry and lists of contests and grants, and greeting card publishers.

Writing About Music: A Guide to Publishing Opportunities for Authors and Reviewers. Fallen Leaf Press, 1989. (Ready Reference ML128.P24 B37, [shelf 18])

Extensive directory of "over 430 current periodicals, from 21 countries, that publish serious, informative, music-related articles and/or reviews in English." The guide discusses the readership and focus of each journal, types of articles and manuscripts desired, and style and citation guidelines.

Science / Technology

Directory of Publishing Sources: The Researcher's Guide to Journals in Engineering and Technology. Wiley, 1982. (Ready Reference Z5851 .B34, [shelf 18])

Covers nearly 300 English-language journals and provides the scope and content required of each publisher, type of acceptable contribution, manuscript submission procedure, style guide and information on its refereeing procedures.

Mathematical Journals: An Annotated Guide. Scarecrow, 1992. (Ready Reference Z6653 .L5, [shelf 18])

Lists "350 active English-language journal titles" and describes their contents and editorial policies. Also includes a directory of publishers and distributors.

Social / Behavioral Sciences

An annotated list of more than 400 journals and indexes in the areas that encompass the field of anthropology. Annotations cover the scope of each title.

Covers more than 400 journals that deal with psychology and related fields. Manuscript and review information is included.
