Let's Get Started 


The professional librarians and staff of Helmke Library will assist you in your information-foraging endeavors. We realize that the library and the Internet are part of a vast, complicated information environment. We are eager to make your search as fruitful and efficient as possible. Follow along, and soon you will become a skilled information forager!

Let us suggest how to plan and begin your research, teach you to use electronic and printed resources, and help you evaluate and locate materials housed in the library or retrieved from afar. Always feel free to ask for assistance at the Service Desk.

Some quick facts about Helmke Library:

  • Books are shelved by call number in the shelves (or stacks) on each floor. Call numbers A-N are on the third floor, the Ps are on the second floor, and Q-Z can be found on the fourth floor. General reference books are located on the first floor, and science reference books are on the fourth floor of the library. Many wonderful electronic resources are available on and off campus to authorized IPFW users. Campus visitors may access these resources in the library.
  • The library receives more than 1,700 scholarly journals and popular magazines in printed format, and provides access to more than 20,000 full-text e-journals online. Current and bound periodicals with call numbers A-P can be found on the second floor. Science periodicals with call numbers Q-Z are on the fourth floor.
  • The library is also a depository for U.S. government publications. These documents are shelved on the second floor and listed in IUCAT, Indiana University's online library catalog.
