Summary Goal Statements

ANNUAL PROGRESS AND PLANNING REPORT

Walter E. Helmke Library

July 2002 - June 2004

1. Develop the Integrated Information Foraging Environment (IIFE) to provide high-quality professional information services, to support the development of information literacy skills for life-long learning, and to promote the scholarly and creative achievements of IPFW faculty, students, and staff.

1.1. Implement and promote awareness of information literacy standards in library research assignments, reference and information services, and library instruction.

1.2. Maintain and develop components of the Helmke Library Web site to provide access to information resources.

1.3. Develop Science Information Center services and programs to support IPFW and the wider community in the use and evaluation of scientific and technical information.

1.4. Develop Academic Support Center services and programs for beginning students.

1.5. Develop Digital Data Center services and programs to aid users in the retrieval and manipulation of data in digital formats (also library Goal 4).

1.6. Develop Regional Resource Center for the Arts and Humanities services and programs.

1.7. Coordinate and promote training opportunities for library staff, faculty, and area librarians.

1.8. Collaborate with IPFW administration and faculty to showcase faculty and student research.

2. Increase and enhance access to information and library resources.

2.1. Anticipate needs of users for a variety of library materials.

2.2. Improve the ability of users to locate, request, and obtain research materials not accessible in the library.

2.3. Improve the ability of users to access library personal account information.

2.4. Increase access to library materials through IUCAT Catalog.

2.5. Increase access to electronic journals and databases.

2.6. Develop a cost-effective electronic reserve system integrated with campus instructional services.

2.7. Study usability of integrating serials into the monograph collection.

3. Provide an attractive library facility that affords easy access to information and an atmosphere conducive to study, learning, and research.

3.1. Design addition and renovation to library building according to needs specified by faculty, students, and staff.

3.2. Improve accessibility of government documents.

3.3. Establish a unified and secure technical services area.

3.4. Adapt ARL LibQual Survey to library's ongoing evaluation of user satisfaction.

3.5. Seek salary equity for librarians and staff.

4. Advance the quality of life in Fort Wayne and the surrounding region through excellent library services and outreach.

4.1. Promote the unique services and resources of Helmke Library.

4.2. Provide library displays and events that enhance the learning experience.

4.3. Develop fee-based library services.

4.4. Develop and enhance access to information about northeast Indiana.
