Industry Research

This guide lists basic sources of information found in Helmke Library or on the World Wide Web that can help you collect data and analyze an industry. Start by finding the 4-6 digit code for the industry and use the classification tables for clear definition of your subject. Use overviews to find statistics, trends, drivers, and major companies within the industry. Associations and periodical indexes are sources for identifying current issues affecting industries. Rankings and financial ratios provide you with the information to make your own analysis.

Classification

Many sources define and organize industry information according to standard classifications. Use the classification tables to identify the 4-6 digit code for your research.

  • NAICS (North American Industrial Classification System) used for the U.S. Economic Census and County Business Patterns. (Service Desk PREX 2.6/2:IN 27/CLOTH)
  • SIC (Standard Industrial Classification)
