Summary and Priority Activities

ANNUAL PROGRESS AND PLANNING REPORT

Walter E. Helmke Library

Goals and Objectives for 2004 - 2005

In 2004-2005, library staff will concentrate on several major projects:

  • Continued development of the Integrated Information Foraging Environment, focusing on the development of interactive tutorials to teach library skills.
  • Implementation of ILLiad software to enhance document delivery processes and of SFX and SIRSI Rooms software to enhance search and retrieval of electronic information.
  • Development of an assessment model for the library as a whole and for certain key services.
  • Hosting the Remnant Trust rare book exhibit.
  • Renovation of the first floor (and if funds are available, the third floor as well).

Goal 1.  Develop the Integrated Information Foraging Environment (IIFE) to support and promote professional information services, information literacy skills for life-long learning, and the scholarly and creative achievements of IPFW faculty, students, and staff.

1.1. Implement and promote awareness of information literacy standards in library research assignments, reference and information services, and library instruction.

1.2. Develop Academic Support Center services and programs for beginning students.

1.3. Develop Science Information Center services and programs to support IPFW and the wider community in the use and evaluation of scientific and technical information.

1.4. Develop and expand services and programs of the Business Resource Center as a virtual and physical information center to support business education and community partnerships.

1.5. Develop and expand PIRS Public Information Reference Service to support access to IPFW depository collections and to electronic government information at the federal, state, local, and international levels. 

1.6. Develop Regional Resource Center for the Arts and Humanities services and programs.

1.7. Develop IPFW University Archives as a recognized and university-supported information center.

Goal 2.  Increase and enhance access to information and library resources.

2.1. Improve processes for collection development and acquisitions to better anticipate and meet the needs of library users.

2.2. Increase unmediated services to library users.

2.3. Increase access to library materials through IUCAT.

2.4. Increase access to electronic journals and databases.

2.5. Maintain and develop components of the Helmke Library Web site to provide access to information resources.

2.6. Assure privacy of personal data. 

2.7. Maintain a cost-effective electronic reserves system integrated with campus instructional services. 

2.8. Integrate additional science materials on the fourth floor.

Goal 3.  Provide an attractive library facility that affords easy access to information and an atmosphere conducive to study.

3.1. Seek solution to lack of needed or attractive spaces for study, research, use of technology, and group activities.

3.2. Create more space for group study and improve appearance of second floor for better access to materials.

3.3. Improve appearance and access to materials on third floor.

3.4. Facilitate interaction and communication among Reference & Information librarians.

3.5. Facilitate interaction of DDS and Service Desk staff; give students and others a single point for materials pick-up.

3.6. Contribute space for FYE support.

3.7. Ensure access to special collections and microforms.

Goal 4.  Advance the quality of life in Fort Wayne and the surrounding region through excellent library services and outreach.

4.1. Provide library displays and events that enhance the learning experience (see also 1.7.).

4.2. Provide library events that enhance the learning experience.

4.3. Library staff may contribute to local charities individually or as a group.

Goal 5.  Support the continuous improvement of library operations, not elsewhere classified.

5.1. Develop an assessment model for the library.

5.2. Develop volunteer and internship opportunities.

5.3. Seek salary equity for librarians.

5.4. Seek salary equity and assure awards system for staff. 

5.5. Hire and maintain excellent librarians.
