Discovering Books

...using library catalogs, bibliographies

One quick way to narrow your search for anthropological materials in large, multidisciplinary databases is to add the following statement to your search strategy:

(your keywords or subject terms) and (anthropolog$ or ethnolog$ or ethnog$ or archaeol$ or archeolog$ or cross cultur$)

This example works well in IUCAT Catalog (Indiana University's online library catalog). Remember to include the correct truncation symbol for the database you are using, whether an asterisk (*), question mark (?), dollar sign ($), etc.

For more information about constructing effective Boolean search strategies, see Helmke Library's Foraging for Information Worksheet (PDF).
