Welcome to the Information Literacy Tool Kits, a self-guided, teaching-learning component of Helmke Library's Web site, which we have designed as an Integrated Information Foraging Environment or IIFE Web. We think IIFE is a great acronym because searching for the right kind of information can sometimes be so iffy. If you are the instructor of beginning students or a curious new student yourself, you're in the right place to learn how to exploit your amazing, resource-rich information environment at IPFW.
The librarians at Helmke Library have created the following pages to introduce you to the people, resources, and special skills that IPFW students need to succeed. At each stage of your foray through the information landscape, just follow the IIFE Trail of Resources where it leads. Before you know it, you'll be an accomplished information forager!
As you explore these pages, you will discover tips and tools to help you:
- Recognize your information needs
- Focus your research problem or topic
- Develop a strategy to locate information
- Evaluate the best information for your needs
- Cite sources of information accurately
In short, Information literacy! Information literacy enables an IPFW student to recognize an information need, develop a strategy to locate, evaluate, and synthesize information, and cite sources of information accurately.
These skills are what we call Information Literacy Proficiencies, and you can master them all with a reasonable investment of time and effort.
