Information Literacy Tool Kits

About the Information Literacy Tool Kits

This self-guided, teaching-learning component of Helmke Library's Web site introduces the people, resources, and skills to help you find and evaluate information that's right for your needs.

If you are a beginning student at IPFW, or an instructor of beginning students, you're in the right place to learn how to track down valuable information, just as a hunter-gatherer might scan his or her environment looking for food resources.

The librarians at IPFW have designed the library Web site as an Integrated Information Foraging Environment or IIFE Web. We think "IIFE" is a cool acronym because searching for the right kind of information can be so... well, iffy.

Learning Outcomes

Helmke Library's Information Literacy Tool Kits help you to

  • Focus your information needs
  • Develop a search strategy to find the best information
  • Retrieve and evaluate the information you find
  • Manage your sources effectively and cite them accurately
  • Understand how scholars produce and consume information

Mastering these Information Literacy Proficiencies will make your class assignments more manageable and help you succeed in your chosen field of study.

Getting Started

The eight Information Literacy Proficiencies each present an orderly IIFE Trail of Resources. Follow the paths where they lead, and notice the people and services along the way. Take advantage of what the library and campus offers, and soon you'll be a skilled information forager too!

Choose one of the proficiencies numbered #1 to #8 in the menu on the left to get started. Or follow the arrow below to explore information literacy, step by step.

Let's start out with #1 Know What I Need.
