The Service Desk on the first floor is the starting point for many library activities.
Reference Assistance and ConsultationGet help at the Service Desk! Our information assistants at the Service Desk will provide basic reference assistance for the IUCAT Catalog or show you how to access the many other databases and indexes available at Helmke Library. Stop by or call 481-6505 for assistance.
Need additional help? More in-depth assistance is available for those who sign up at the Service Desk for an appointment with a skilled professional. These one-on-one consultation sessions with a subject librarian usually last about 30 minutes, and are designed to help you hone your information foraging skills. Appointments can be scheduled in advance. Walk-ins are always welcome.
Circulation ServicesAt the Service Desk you can check out books, course reserves, and other library materials. A valid university ID or an Indiana University Libraries card is required for checkouts. Please return items at the Service Desk or the book drop in the library's lobby.
Course ReservesWhen format and copyright allow, assigned supplemental readings will be scanned and posted to ReservesEXpress, the library's electronic reserve system. Books and other physical objects can be placed on reserve for check out at the Service Desk. Students need to present an Official University ID to check out reserve items. To access scanned items, students log into ReservesEXpress using their computer lab username and password. To place materials on reserve, instructors log in to ReservesEXpress with their computer network account username and password, and fill in the online request form for each item (maximum 25). Instructors should then bring their reserve materials to the Service Desk for processing.
