Services for Visitors

General Policy

Responsible high school students and others are invited and encouraged to visit the Helmke Library and use its many resources. During periods when demand is heavy and there are several people waiting for service, our first priority is service to IPFW students, faculty, and staff.

Groups Visiting the Library

Due to space and seating shortages in the Helmke Library, groups must be limited to fewer than 20 in number. Arrangements for groups must be made with the Head of Reference and Information Services at least one week in advance of the visit. High school groups that pre-arrange their visits will be offered copies of library guides and the liability consent form required to check out library materials.

Finding the Helmke Library

Use the links below to view or print a map of the local IPFW area, the IPFW campus, and the Walter E. Helmke Library. If you need additional information, please call the Helmke Library Service Desk at 260-481-6512.

Library Instruction and Orientation

Library staff provide library instruction only to groups affiliated with the University. A self-guided tour is available on the Web and at the Service Desk at all hours the Helmke Library is open. In addition, numerous free library guides describe resources available on particular topics.

Circulation of Library Materials

Any resident of the State of Indiana may check out two books per subject from the Helmke Library's general collections. Most library materials, including government publications, circulate for thirty days. Periodicals and reference materials do not circulate.

To receive an Indiana University Libraries' borrower's card, valid at ANY Indiana University library, Indiana residents aged 18 and over should bring two forms of identification. One ID must have a current address. Residents under age 18 should bring at least one form of identification (e.g., a driver's license, school ID, or public library card) and should have a parent or guardian sign a liability consent form. These forms are available on the Web and at the Service Desk.

Out-of-State Visitors

Out-of-state visitors are welcome to do research in the library, but they may not check out library materials. Coin-operated photocopiers are available on the first, second, and fourth floors.

Reference and Information Services

All library users are encouraged to ask for assistance at the Service Desk. Research assistance will be provided to visitors on a limited first-come, first-serve basis. Appointments with a librarian may be made at the Service Desk.

Document Delivery Services

A fee-based document delivery service is available for obtaining library materials not available at IPFW. Visitors may wish to check first with their local public or institution libraries.

Database and Index Services

The Helmke Library subscribes to many electronic databases. While some are available to IPFW students, faculty, and staff for off-campus use via the library's homepage, most may be used by visitors only in the library. Restricted accessibility is a requirement of licensing requirements. The availability of each database is described in the Find Resources By... portion of the library's homepage. Indiana residents may take advantage of the state-supported Inspire suite of databases.

The library has a fee-based service for customized online database searches. Some local public libraries offer subsidized online searches.

Computer Availability

Library workstations are available to the public on the first floor of the library. The printers are networked and print pages back to back. There is no charge for printing. The computers are configured only for access to research materials. Word processing and other application software are not available. Computers on the second and third floors are available for quick catalog searches. Search results may be downloaded to a disk or USB device from any library workstation.
