About Codes, Standards, & SpecificationsA code is a system of rules that govern technical specifications for an object or action. In engineering, codes govern how processes are carried out, and what materials are used to create an object. A standard governs physical specifications of an object including weight, size, quantity, and quality. Standards also govern processes in accounting, safety, and health.
Helmke Library owns a variety of codes, standards, and specifications for mechanical and civil engineering, architecture, and construction. This guide focuses on the current building code resources available at Helmke Library. A separate guide is available for resources on accounting standards.
The following selection of printed resources are shelved in the Reference collection (first floor) or Science Reference collection (fourth floor). Guides to the literature are an excellent means to become familiar with the model codes and regulatory agencies that govern equipment, processes, and specifications for a variety of structures.
