IUCAT, the library's online catalog, will not be available from 6:00 pm on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 until 8:00 am on Friday January 2, 2004 in order to re-index the keyword section. Although the library will be open on Wednesday, December 31, we will not be able to check out books or use the catalog in any other way.

The library hours for the semester break and holidays are posted on the library hours page.

The library will close at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26 and remain closed on Thursday and Friday November 27 and 28. The library will resume normal hours on Saturday, November 29.

ProQuest is providing the entire IU community with a trial of their archival edition of the Historical New York Times (1851-2001) and current issues (1999-present) of five national newspapers: the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and the Christian Science Monitor.

Please note that you must access these newspapers through the IU Web site at this URL: http://www.indiana.edu/~libcodev/trials.html.
The trial ends Nov. 24.

Two good sources of ideas are CQ Researcher and Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center.

As part of our second floor renovation project, we are moving our science periodicals to the fourth floor and our language and literature books to the 2nd floor. Some periodicals are out of order this semester. THIS IS REALLY CONFUSING! Ask for assistance at the Service Desk or check the chart located nearby for a current update.

Helmke Library's Foraging Gear contest helped one lucky winner start the school year off right! Students who attended a SOAR event this summer, had the opportunity to enter the Foraging Gear Contest. The prize package included an American Heritage College Dictionary, a book on college survival, a pack of five rewritable compact discs and a new sling bag. Congratulations, Amber Neff

Starting April 7 look for the Helmke-produced video "Making the Grade" being transmitted on College Cable Access Channel 56. Read It While It’s Hot! Chili Cook-Off, February 23, 2003, 1-4 p.m., IPFW Walb Ballroom. IPFW will host the first major event of the Allen County Reads effort to bring people together through the act of reading one book as one community. The book is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Sample chili submitted by local groups while discussing the book with fellow readers. Awards will be given for Best Hot, Best Mild, Best Veggie, Most Original Name, Most Unusual, and People’s Choice chili.

Try the new online version of CQ Researcher. One of the "hot" topics in the news is investigated every week and is presented with concise and well-balanced information from all sides of the issue. Topics range from social and teen issues to environment, health, education and technology.

Try the new Oxford Reference Online offering a full-text search of 100 leading subject dictionaries from the venerable Oxford University Press. The emphasis is on concise, authoritative, and up-to-date information primarily in the humanities and the social sciences. The Oxford English Dictionary is not included in Oxford Reference Online, but will be available shortly as a separate database.

Beginning Saturday January 18, the library will open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 5:30 p.m. The university and the library will be closed on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 20.

Get a head start in the library. Take a virtual tour of the library to learn about our many services and resources. Activate your university computer lab account. Your unique username and password will give you access to many library services such as online reserves and remote access to library databases.

Pick up your Official University ID card in Walb Union. The ID card is your library card, too, good at any Indiana University library statewide. You must bring your card to the library to check out books and other materials.
