Demise of ERIC? - 2004-03-15
|
ERIC, the Educational Resources Information Clearinghouse, has been, since the 1960's, the major database for educational information. The ERIC system will soon be replaced by a new system. The expected changes are outlined in the following memo from the director of the ERIC Document Reproduction Services: The ERIC Program is undergoing significant change. Last year the U.S. Department of Education announced its intention to restructure and overhaul the program, which had remained basically unchanged since its inception in the 1960's. Instead of 19 separate contracted entities working in a paper-based system, the Government envisions a centralized operation whose work will largely be conducted electronically. Last summer the Government released a Request for Proposals to identify a contractor to perform the work of the new ERIC program. An award has not yet been announced, but may be made soon. The 16 subject-specific ERIC Clearinghouses ceased operation on 31 December 2003, and the remaining three support contracts will end later this year.
How will these changes affect you, our customers of the ERIC Document Reproduction Service? EDRS is one of the three remaining ERIC contracts. The latest information we have from the Department of Education follows:
* ERIC E*Subscribe * EDRS will maintain E*Subscribe services through September 2004, providing a one-month overlap with a new ERIC electronic system, and then will cease operation
* Standing Orders for Microfiche * EDRS will produce the final RIE issue in July 2004. Although the ERIC microfiche archive will be preserved, the new ERIC will not produce microfiche
* On-Demand Document Delivery Services * Customers may order individual copies of ERIC Documents in paper, pdf, or microfiche until July 30; EDRS will not fulfill any orders after that date
EDRS is now pro-rating invoices for microfiche standing order accounts through July, and E*Subscribe accounts through September. If you have pre-paid for a longer period of service or have a Deposit Account for on-demand document delivery service, EDRS will refund the remaining balance. We will maintain Customer Service operations while we reconcile accounts.
The New ERIC will have many journal and non-journal resources available on-line, if the contributor grants permission to do so. Otherwise, the database will include a link to a source (e.g., publisher, journal article service). All "Level 1" documents (releasable in electronic, paper, and microfiche formats) from 1993 * July 2004 will be available as part of the New ERIC database. However, all "Level 2" documents (restricted to microfiche) from 1993 forward, and all documents from 1966 * 1992, will not be available on-line. Copies of these materials will only be available from institutions maintaining the ERIC collection.
EDRS is committed to providing up-to-date information. As we receive new information about forthcoming changes in ERIC, we will post the news on our Web site. Please check the News box on our homepage (www.edrs.com). We will also communicate by email. Please contact us with any corrections or changes to your contact information, so we can keep you abreast of noteworthy events.
Thank you for your patronage over the years. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us by email at service@edrs.com.
Sincerely,
Pete Dagutis Director, EDRS
